Georgetown has accorded great importance to the language, culture, and politics of the Lusophone-speaking World for more than eighty years. Current program directors are Dr. Vivaldo Andrade dos Santos (Brazilian Literature and Cultural Studies) and Dr. Michael Ferreira (Portuguese Linguistics), our programs offer a variety of graduate as well as undergraduate courses for the Portuguese major and minors in both Iberian and Latin American works of literature, cultural studies, and linguistics.
Over the past two decades, our efforts deepened through our collaboration with the Instituto Camões which now sponsors a Portuguese lecturer, Dr. Glória Alhinho, an integral part of the Portuguese faculty. The Portuguese Program has organized several events in conjunction with the embassies of Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, and Cape Verde.
The Portuguese program has also greatly benefited from the Luso-American Development Foundation through cooperation with the projects sponsored by FLAD in the School of Foreign Service, especially through the BMW Center for German and European Studies at Georgetown University.
