CELEBRATING CERVANTES

We invite you to join us at the event CELEBRATING CERVANTES on the occasion of the 400 anniversary of the death of Miguel de Cervantes.

On the occasion of the 400 anniversary of the death of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, Spanish Cervantist scholar Jordi Gracia will discuss the author’s life, his works, and influence on world literature.

In the past 400 years, many have tried to understand the human and emotional dimensions present throughout Cervantes’ works. Many have labeled Cervantes as a strong man with an extraordinary talent with words. Neither helpless nor predestined, Cervantes managed to step out of his time to step into our world with Don Quixote. Jordi Gracia’s new biography La conquista de la ironía (Taurus, 2016) reflects on the irony of how much praise the “first modern novel” has received presently while it was thought to be too progressive for its time.

Presented and moderated by Gwen Kirkpatrick, Professor and Chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Georgetown University.
