Philosophy of Research

In our disciplines, research is defined as the ability to find the proper primary and secondary sources needed for building and refining an academic argument. In Linguistics, it also consists of data collection and analysis.

How to get started

Mostly, our undergraduate students are introduced to research in upper-level courses while writing their final research papers. They also learn the basics of conducting research through faculty members and in consultation with Jade Madrid, our reference librarian.

How to get connected with a faculty mentor

Through the DUS or asking directly our faculty members many times during or after a course taken with them.

Earning credit for undergraduate research

SPAN 3333 is a 1-credit course that provides students with an opportunity to engage deeply with a research project on Spanish Linguistics over the course of a semester. Students will choose one from among a list of available projects in progress and will work on it with a graduate student mentor throughout the semester on a weekly basis. The projects can be performed in the classroom, on computers, or in the field; topics will vary.

Getting paid for research

Students can get paid for research through HoyaWorks. Typically, this option is for grad students, but undergraduates can apply and be hired as well.
