Department of Spanish and Portuguese Celebrates Sant Jordi

Thank you to everyone who joined the Department of Spanish and Portuguese in its celebration of Sant Jordi! The day was filled with a variety of fun and exciting activities. View a video highlight of the celebration here.

  • 2:00 pm (Roses in Red Square): Pick up a free rose in Red Square.
  • 3:30 pm (Documentary Viewing in ICC 302-P): Despite its prohibition by the Spanish government, on October 1st, 2017, two million Catalans voted in the referendum on Catalan independence. Join us for a documentary viewing of the events that took place that day (In Catalan with English and Spanish subtitles).
  • 5:30pm (Lecture in McGhee Library): Hofstra University professor Vicent Lledó-Guillem will talk about The Making of Catalan Linguistic Identity in Medieval and Early Modern Times. The historical relationship between the Catalan and Occitan languages had an impact on the linguistic identity of the Crown of Aragon and the emergent Spanish Empire.
  • 7:00 pm (Catalan Dinner in ICC 450): Complimentary dinner of traditional Catalan food!
