Theme:
This year’s conference welcomes proposals within the theme of “Encuentros con el cuerpo: actitudes, performances y los sentidos,” encouraging the submission of a broad range of research in the fields of Linguistics, and Iberian and Latin American Literatures, and Cultures. GRAPHSY 2023 looks for proposals that bring into focus matters of corporeality and the senses that define and interpret the experience of the subject.
Speakers
Linguistics Keynote Speaker:
Dr. María Cioè-Peña (University of Pennsylvania)
As a bilingual/biliterate, neurodiverse researcher, Dr. María Cioè-Peña examines the intersections of disability, language, school-parent partnerships and education policy. She focuses specifically on Latinx bilingual children with dis/abilities, their families and their ability to access multilingual and inclusive learning spaces within public schools. María’s two-time award-winning dissertation focused on the experiences of Spanish-speaking mothers raising emergent bilinguals labeled as disabled. María’s work is featured in multiple journals including Urban Review; Education Forum; Bilingual Research Journal; International Journal of Inclusive Education, as well as contributed to multiple edited volumes. Her book, (M)othering Labeled Children: Bilingualism and Disability in the Lives of Latinx Mothers, published by Multilingual Matters in 2021. And, in 2022, she received the Early Career Award from AERA’s Bilingual Research SIG. María is currently an Assistant Professor in Educational Linguistics at The University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education.
Literature Keynote Speaker:
Julia Chang (Cornell University)
Julia Chang is Assistant Professor of Spanish in the Department of Romance Studies and affiliated faculty in the Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program and the Southeast Asia Program at Cornell University. She holds a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. Before coming to Cornell, she was a member of the faculty at Brown University and has also taught at San Quentin State Prison with the Prison University Project. Her research and teaching interests are wide-ranging and include modern and contemporary Iberian literature and culture, Fil-Hispanic cultural production, feminist and queer theory, race and coloniality, disability studies, and game studies. Currently, Dr. Chang is a member of TRECE (Taller de raza, etnicidad, y ciudadanía en España), the CNY Humanities Corridor Group “Global Disability Studies,” and a Cornell CIVIC Media fellow on “Games and Interactive Digital Media.” She is also a recent recipient of the Russell Distinguished Teaching Award.
Dr. Chang’s research has been published in such venues as Hispanic Review, Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies, Revista de Estudios Hispánicos, Journal of Literary and Cultural Disability Studies, the Chronicle of Higher Education, and the edited volume Presumed Incompetent II. Her first book Blood Novels: Gender, Caste, and Race in Spanish Realism (University Toronto Press 2022) was the inaugural winner of the “Harriet S. Turner Beca” from the Asociación Internacional de Galdosistas.
