Book Talk with Dr. Carlos Garrido Castellano

Join us for a book talk by Professor Carlos Garrido Castellano regarding his recent work, Chorus: Sonic Politics of the Carnivalesque in Tragic Times: Thinking from Andalusia.

Professor Garrido Castellano is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies at University College Cork. He is also a Senior Research Associate at the Visual Identities in Arts and Design Research Centre at the University of Johannesburg, Review Editor of the MHRA journal Portuguese Studies, and Series Editor of the De Gruyter book series “Towards a Global Understanding of Cultural Work.”

His Book: Chorus: Sonic Politics of the Carnivalesque in Tragic Times posits the carnivalesque as a fertile laboratory to understand and move past our crisis-driven contemporaneity. Engaging with sound and noise from Cádiz, Spain, the book situates carnivalesque mobilization as a platform to revitalize our capacity to redemocratize societies and envisage liveable futures. Chorus argues for a profound rethinking of the connection between freedom and carnival, demonstrating that carnival music is crucial to understanding collective ways of acting that go beyond formal parliamentary politics.
