This lecture will examine the central notion in 20th-century Spanish culture of “vital force” and its relation to Modernity through key authors such as Miguel de Unamuno, Pío Baroja and Ramón Gómez de la Serna.
Nicolás Fernández-Medina is Associate Professor of Spanish and Philosophy at The Pennsylvania State University. He specializes in late eighteenth- to early twentieth-century Spanish literature, philosophy, and culture. He is the author of “Life Embodied: The Promise of Vital Force in Spanish Modernity” and “The Poetics of Otherness in Antonio Machado’s ‘Proverbios Y Cantares’.” His new book project is “Raising the Dead: The Science and Literature of Resuscitation in Spain.”
